They're putting an interesting twist on Sonic.

When it was announced that Sega's most lucrative character Sonic the Hedgehog was getting his own live action movie, I scratched my head. Sega Genesis was the first video game console I owned, so of course, Sonic was big in my household. Still, the idea of bringing a super fast hedgehog that collects gold rings while he battles an evil scientist who turns animals into robots doesn't seem like a solid movie plot. Soon after the movie was announced, Westworld's James Marsden signed up to star in the film

Speaking at a conference, Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos revealed the plot for the Sonic film, and it doesn't sound like any of the video game stories will be coming in to play. According to DeadlineGianopulos said in the film that Sonic will be, "a juvenile delinquent on the adventures in a pretty straight rural environment with a local policeman. It was instantly engaging and it was good enough where you could see where it’s going." Admittedly, that sounds like a weak plot. Neal Moritz, the producer behind the Fast & Furious films, is the mastermind behind the Sonic movie and explained his concept for the adaptation further to The Wrap.

“What we’re trying to do with Sonic is make a movie about a small-town police officer and Sonic at a time when they are both desperately in need of a friend, and we hope that this theme is friendship is what gives the film its heart and makes it prosper," he stated. Sonic will land in theaters in Fall of 2019.
