Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most recognizable characters in video game history. Sega introduced the blue speedster in 1991, and he became the company's main mascot. Much like Mario did for Nintendo, Sonic held down the action-adventure genre over at Sega. He was also placed into spin-off games, and fan favorite characters from the franchise got their own games as well. In May, it was announced that a Sonic the Hedgehog movie was in production with Westworld's James Marsden set to star. The live-action film has now cast their main villain, Dr. Robotnik.

More commonly referred to as Eggman, Dr. Robotnik will be played by legendary comedian Jim Carrey. According to DeadlineCarrey is currently negotiating the role, which will place him in the shoes of Sonic's most notorious villain. Jeff Fowler is set to make his directorial debut for the film, with Tika Sumpter (Ride Along) also set to star in the movie. Although details for the film are sparse, Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos stated that the plot will be based around "a juvenile delinquent on the adventures in a pretty straight rural environment with a local policeman. It was instantly engaging and it was good enough where you could see where it’s going."
