Rich The Kid has made some major connections in a short time, and that should be reflected in the features on his upcoming debut album. The Atlanta rapper just released "New Freezer," a collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, but that's far from the only big name he's landed for his LP. "I got Lil Wayne on there of course, Tory Lanez on my album, Playboi Carti, my brother of course," he said in an interview with Zane Lowe on Beats 1 Radio. The as-of-yet-untitled project is set to be released through Interscope, who Rich signed with in June.
As a young artist with "his own wave," Rich is hoping to make as big a splash with his debut as his collaborator Playboi Carti. "I told [Carti] it was coming," he said. "It took him a long time for him to put his project out. Everybody was waiting, a lot of shit was leaking. It was very anticipated. It was a really big moment... Young artists, I really love to see us winning. It's not to often we get to that level."
As far as how the Kendrick collab came together, it was a combination of good timing and good music. "I was in the studio recording over at the Interscope studios," said Rich. "Kendrick Lamar came in... He asked me to play some music for him..I played two records. I had just recorded "New Freezer" recently... Right when he heard it, he's like 'yo, who else on this song?!'... 'Yo I gotta get on this one, this shit dumb!'"
When the verse eventually came in, Rich was awestruck. "It was shocking to hear Kendrick on a song with me it's like 'whoa, is this real?'" he said. "It feels like magic, like it was meant to be."
While Rich's album is still without a release date, we should expect a video for "New Freezer" in the near future. "Kendrick's working on the treatment," he said. "He's gonna be co-directing it with the team... Dave Free," he said, referring to Kendrick's directing partner and one-half of The Little Homies, who worked on "Alright," "Humble," and more. "It's gonna be crazy."
