The Grammys had a positive effect in terms of album sales, as those nominated and those who won both received a boost in the past seven days. Despite Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d city not taking home a Grammy, the rapper still saw a spike in his sales and an almost twenty-spot jump up the charts. Of course, four-time Grammy winners Macklemore & Ryan Lewis also benefited this past week, seeing a ten-spot jump into the top 15 of the Billboard 200 (as if they needed it). Apart from these two, we saw Ty Dolla $ign make his Billboard debut with his new EP, Beach House, which sold around 6,000 units-- nothing too outrageous, but still solid, considering it's a short project with previously-released mixtape cuts on it. Isaiah Rashad dropped his debut effort Cilvia Demo on iTunes this past week as well, so we'll have to wait and see next week if he manages to chart with it. Check out how Kid Ink, Eminem, Drake and more are doing below.
1) Beyonce— Beyonce: Beyonce’s album continues a very slow descent on the Billboard 200, so slow in fact that she actually didn’t move from the #4 spot this. Bey’s visual LP moved another 48,000 units of her album and brought her total sales up to 1,620,000. This was an increase in sales of 18%.
2) Eminem—The Marshall Mathers LP 2: Eminem’s MMLP2 was quite polarizing when it dropped, but we’ve seen it remain a strong contender on the charts since its release. After 12 weeks of charting, Marshall sold 24,000 units, with a grand total that is slowly nearing 2 million, 1,870,000.
3) Macklemore & Ryan Lewis—The Heist: You know these guys are here to stay forever. Forever, ever. After taking home four Grammys last Sunday, it’s unsurprising that they did so well on the Billboard 200 this past week. The duo rose up from #24 to #14. They sold 18,000 units of the album with total sales of 1,287,000. They’ve been going strong on the charts for 68 weeks now.
4) Drake—Nothing Was The Same: Drizzy fell below The Heist this week, after ceding Rap Album Of The Year at the Grammys to them. Nonetheless, NWTS was up one spot from last week, coming in at #17. After 18 weeks on the charts, he moved 15,000 units and brought his total sales to 1,416,000
5) R. Kelly— Black Panties: R. Kellz album dedicated to Black Panties everywhere fell a few spots this week, dropping to #22. Kelly dropped in sales 24% and moved around 10k.
6) Justin Timberlake—The 20/20 Experience 2: JT’s second The 20/20 Experience actually made a 1-spot climb this past week, from #26 to #25. After spending 17 weeks on the Billboard 200, Justin has sold around 11,302 copies.
7) Kendrick Lamar—good kid, m.A.A.d city: Despite not winning any Grammys last week, Kendrick still benefited from the nomination, and perhaps he even benefited a tiny bit from the loss as it did get everyone speaking his name. His Spotify streams increased by 99% following the awards, and not only that, but his debut album sales saw a large spike. The album rose up the ranks of the Billboard 200, from #55 to #33. After 66 weeks of charting, K. Dot sold 8,200 units with total sales of 1,151,000.
8) Kid Ink— My Own Lane: Kid Ink’s My Own Lane is in its third week now, as he falls from #21 to #34, finding a spot right below Kendrick. The RCA debut moved another 8,200 units, as his total sales reach 73,000.
9) Jhene Aiko—Sail Out EP: Jhene Aiko, who saw a rise on the charts in recent weeks, found herself displaced this week down to #40. After spending 10 weeks on the charts, she’s moved 7,361 units.
10) Childish Gambino— Because The Internet: Childish Gambino fell below his friend Jhene this past week, with Because The Internet dropping down to #44. The rapper/comedian/actor still moved 7,200 units bringing his tally up to 201,000.
11) Ty Dolla $ign— Beach House EP: Ty Dolla $ign made his debut on the Billboard 200 this past week with the release of his Beach House EP. The extended play debuted at #51 and sold 6,100 units opening week.
Other charters this week include The Step Brothers aka Evidence & Alchemist, with their joint album Lord Steppington. The album debuted at #61 on the Billboard 200, moving around 5.4k copies. We also find B.o.B’s Underground Luxury at #90, dropping from #53 after just six weeks. As Hov continues on his “MCHG” Tour, his album has dropped down to #92. Finally we have Yo Gotti’s I Am coming in right below Jay Z at #93, dropping from #50.
