As previously reported, Pete Davidson had come under fire for making a distasteful joke at the expense of Texas Republican Congressman-elect Dan Crenshaw. Crenshaw wears an eye-patch after surviving an IED blast while he was stationed in Iraq. Pete Davidson suggested that Crenshaw looked like a “hitman in a porno movie,” due to his eye-patch, a joke that didn't go over too well, even amongst comics.
Everything came to a head last night when Davidson invited Crenshaw to join him on SNL's "Weekend Update," in an attempt to reconcile their differences. Davidson expressed his regrets live on air.
"In what I know was a huge shock for people that know me, I made a poor choice last week...I made a joke about Lt. Comm. Dan Crenshaw and on behalf of the show and myself I apologize," Davidson said. "If there is one good thing that came from this, maybe it was for one day the left and the right finally came together to agree on something: That I'm a dick."
Then out of nowhere, Crenshaw appeared on stage next to Davidson. The two men traded barbs, mostly at Davidson's expense, on the defensive for once, before Crenshaw relayed the following message of respect to the television audience, and his younger counterpart: "There are a lot of lessons to learn here. Not just that the left and the right can still agree on some things. But also this: Americans can forgive one another."
