The Weeknd doesn't have to do all that much to go viral these days. The Toronto singer's cryptic, infrequent tweets often get a lot of traction no matter the subject matter, or lack thereof, though he may have outdone himself Saturday night. Tweeting out a simple "?," Abel not only brought in upwards of 100k likes, but a seemingly infinite number of quote tweet memes.
While fans were quick to have fun with it, a few were a little confused as to how such a simple tweet went viral.
As Complex points out, other fans took the tweet as a reference to controversial rapper XXXTentacion's new album, coincidentally titled ?. According to DJ Akademiks, The Weeknd followed XXX on Instagram yesterday as well. Such a co-sign would be divisive, as XXX has been accused of domestic abuse, with disturbing details of the alleged assaults of his ex-girlfriend being made public via a testimony from the victim obtained by Pitchfork last year.
Whatever the "?" might mean, it's clear that fans are eagerly anticipating updates on new material from The Weeknd, to the point that they'll pull as much meaning as they can out of a 1-character tweet. Most recently, Abel appeared on "Pray For Me," a collaboration with Kendrick Lamar for the Black Panther soundtrack. He released his studio album STARBOY in November 2016.
