Audiences love them some moral ambiguity, and occasionally, we're here for the downright villainy. While superhero movies continue to be a safe box office bet, with Marvel and DC's myriad franchises still going strong, it would appear that studios are broadening their horizon. We've already seen Venom find commercial success, though he's hardly an antihero as presented in the film. The trailer for Joaquin Phoenix's Joker looks to be a dark and twisted, Scorcese-inspired character study. Now, Sony has revealed the first teaser for their upcoming Morbius flick, which finds Jared Leto portraying the tormented yet occasionally sympathetic Spider-Man villain.
"Because no one else will walk this path," writes Leto, beneath a looping visual. "This place of shadows, where we do what must be done, no matter the cost." Though it doesn't give us much in the way of direction, it does speak to a few things. For one, the angst factor is indeed present, which speaks to Morbius' isolated nature. Second, the classic "do what must be done" line of reasoning, which speaks to difficult decisions and skewed morality. Hopefully, the film (which also stars Tyrese Gibson in an unnamed role) will do the character justice, as Morbius was one of the more underrated elements of the Spidey-Cartoon.
What do you think? Is Sony about to have a hit on their hands?
