Idris Elba would be the perfect James Bond. He has the British accent, the physical form, and the ladies' hearts. Plus, the man can dress. Speculation that Elba would play Bond has been running wild for years on the web, but it all hit a boiling point last week when it was seemingly confirmed that he would take up the role of 007. The original story came from U.K. tabloid The Daily Star, but their report has since been proven false. The Star claimed that Antoine Fuqua spoke with James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli about a Black James Bond. Apparently, that meeting never took place.
Tricked yet again by Black Bond rumors, the internet went into a frenzy. Those who believe Bond should remain Caucasian cheered, while those who sought to see diversity shook their heads. Among all the internet squabbling, Elba took to Twitter to give his own two cents. In two cryptic tweets, Elba addressed the situation. One tweet features a picture of the actor with a cartoon filter. As a caption, Elba wrote, "my name’s Elba, Idris Elba." His nod to the signature James Bond line led to further speculation. He followed that with a message that everyone should heed in any situation. "Don’t believe the HYPE." True.
