The Lonzo Ball era kicked off in Los Angeles last night and the 19-year old rookie point guard had the pleasure of going up against one of the NBA's most tenacious defenders, Patrick Beverly.
And Beverley made his presence felt right from the jump, fouling Lonzo hard and getting in his face at every opportunity. Beverley, who the Clippers acquired from Houston as part of the Chris Paul trade, clearly had an agenda going into last night's game against the Lakers and he succeeded in harassing Lonzo the full 94 feet of the court.
Lonzo was limited to just three points, four assists and nine rebounds in the Lakers' season-opener, as the Clips picked up a 108-92 victory "on the road." Patrick Beverley had just 10 points and two steals, but he was the center of conversation following the game.
Per ESPN,
"I just had to set the tone," Beverley said. "I told him after the game, due to all the riff-raff his dad brings, he's going to get a lot of people coming at him. He has to be ready for that, and I let him know after the game. But what a better way to start him off. I was 94 feet guarding him tonight. Welcome his little young ass to the NBA."
"He's going to be a great talent, but he has to go through the tough times," Beverley said. "He'll appreciate this when he looks back on it."
