GQ Magazine has named Kevin Durant the "Champion of the Year," as part of GQ's annual "Men of the Year" honors which also includes Colin Kaepernick, late-night host Stephen Colbert and actress Gal Gadot.
In his first season with the Golden State Warriors, Kevin Durant averaged 25.1 points, 8.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists while taking home NBA Finals MVP honors after winning his first NBA championship. This season with Golden State, Durant is up to his usual tricks - averaging 25.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists - which has the Warriors sitting at 10-3.
KD participated in an interview with GQ from India, where he discussed the Golden State Warriors' winning season and touches on that game-winning shot, LeBron James, Jay-Z's 4:44, his now infamous tweets, and getting heckled by Rihanna. Durant's full interview with GQ will be posted Thursday.
In addition to Durant's upcoming cover story, GQ also honored Colin Kaepernick as 2017 "Citizen of the Year." Unlike Durant, Kaepenrick did not partake in an interview, citing his desire to remain silent. The article, titled "Colin Kaepernick Will Not Be Silenced," states, "As his public identity has begun to shift from football star to embattled activist, he has grown wise to the power of his silence."
Instead, GQ asked others to comment on Kaepenrick's story and impact on society, including singer Harry Belafonte, rapper J. Cole, director Ava DuVernay and former teammate Eric Reid.
"Had (Kaepernick not taken a knee), this guy would be making millions of dollars right now. Period, point blank," rapper J. Cole said in the article. "And more important than the money, he was living his dream. He sacrificed his dream."
Shortly after GQ Magazine officially unveiled the covers for this year's "Men of the Year," Durant took to twitter to say how honored and humbled he was to share a cover with Kaepernick.
Durant and the Warriors will host the Orlando Magic tonight before heading to Boston for a showdown against the Eastern Conference leading Boston Celtics on Thursday - the same day his GQ cover story goes live.
