We usually don’t have the best match ups when it comes to Thursday Night football, but thankfully that wasn't the case last night as the (4-1) Carolina Panthers hosted the (4-1) Philadelphia Eagles in a battle of two top 5 teams in the NFL. While Panthers might’ve been a 3 point favorite to start the game being at home, that didn’t help their cause as they fell short and got their second loss of the season, losing 28-23 to the Eagles.
As the score depicts, Carolina Panthers had a chance to win this game however. After pulling within five and forcing an Eagles punt with just minutes to go, the Panthers embarked on a potential game-winning drive TWICE. But with Cam Newton noticeably bothered by something following his touchdown attempt on the previous drive, the quarterback missed on multiple deep pass attempts, and eventually was intercepted by Jalen Mills on an over thrown ball to WR Kelvin Benjamin. Then with two minutes to go, Cam had one last try to take the team down the field but failed to do so after a turn over on downs occurred after some incomplete passes. Cam had THREE interception on the game, something that ultimately led to the team second loss.
"Turning the ball over, giving them layups for scores," Newton said,"you have to protect the football better -- and I'm talking to myself.” Cam did however have 71 yards rushing and ran in a TD, for those of you who have him for fantasy, but the 3 picks were costly. K Benjamin had 9 catches for 99 yards, while Christian McCaffrey hauled in 10 passes for 56 yards and a TD.
As for the Eagles, Carson Wentz led the team with 222 years and 3 touchdown passes, with TE Zach Ertz on the receiving end of 2 of the touchdowns and Nelson Agholor hauling in the other. Alshon Jeffrey had 4 catches for 71 yards and Blount led the team on the ground with 67 yards rushing.
"Having a full offseason under my belt, the game has really slowed down. There's still mistakes out there, there's still plenty of plays you want back. But I'm seeing things a lot quicker," Wentz said on the TNF Postgame set on NFL Network. "I'm feeling way more comfortable with the offense, with the checks and everything else that goes with it. And then also just as a team. We're all playing faster, we're playing together and ultimately, like I said, we're finding ways to win ballgames.”
If you happened to have missed the game, then check out some of the highlights and reactions to Thursday night’s thriller at Bank Of America Stadium. Ironically, people had a fun roasting Cam Newtown for his 3 picks and not understanding of the "routes," something he made headlines about last week after calling out a female reporter for talking about "routes."
