The list of NFL injuries just got a little big longer Thursday night as Richard Sherman suffered a season-ending achilles tear against the Arizona Cardinals.
With Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas already out because of a hamstring injury he suffered in Week 8, cornerback Richard Sherman left the game against the Cardinals with a ruptured Achilles tendon after getting tangled up with receiver John Brown late in the third quarter. While nothing had been confirmed by doctors yet as MRI’s will still be needed, head coach Pete Carroll did say after the game Sherman is out for the rest of the season.
“No coming back from that until you get surgery," head coach Pete Carroll said, adding that Sherman "couldn't even walk" after leaving the game and standing on the sideline. "He's been a bastion of consistency, competitiveness and toughness. We're going to miss the heck out of him.”
The injury is heartbreaking for the organization & its fans, but it shouldn't come as a huge shocker. In fact, Sherman says his foot had been bothering him all season and that he has tried to avoid making any drastic cuts.
"I thought I could get the ball. Once it popped, just unfortunate," said Sherman, who was visibly emotional. "One of those things that you have to play through for as long as you can. When it goes, it goes.”
"I've put a lot of stress on it. Think it would have gone eventually."
Sherman was on Seattle's injury report last week because of his Achilles. He was listed as a non-participant all three days, though the team held walkthroughs and his participation was an estimation of what would have occurred in a normal practice.
Interesting enough, Sherman hasn’t missed a NFL game since he entered the league back in 2011. Unfortunately though, he wasn’t the only Seahawk to get injured Thursday night. Aside from Richard, defensive tackle Jarran Reed (hamstring) and left tackle Duane Brown (ankle) both left in the first half, meanwhile running back C.J. Prosise (ankle) left in the third quarter as well. Despite these injuries, the Seahawks were still able to come out victorious winning 22-16 down in Arizona.
The Seahawks get a mini-bye week coming up as they don't play till next Monday night, which is good considering the players need time to heel their wounds.
