Spotify and Hulu are two of the biggest streaming services for music and TV content respectively in the United States. Their combined paid subscriber base is inching close to 100 million users and their popularity seems destined to continue on growing. In fact, both companies have decided to join forces with one another to accelerate the process of growing their user numbers for the long haul: hit the student demographic with an unparalleled offer value-wise.
As per Variety, Spotify has indeed teamed up with Hulu to create a new subscription plan that is destined to win some people over. Now, students will now be able to get both a premium-level Spotify and a subscription to Hulu for the combined price tag of just $4.99 a month. Spotify Premium for Students, now with Hulu, is just as good as it sounds, essentially combining Spotify’s paid on-demand music service with Hulu’s basic-level paid video option, labeled by the company as its “limited commercials” plan. Bought individually without this discount, both plans could run you nearly $20 a month.
“We’re very excited to be partnering with Hulu – a like-minded company which is as focused as we are on delivering the very best in high quality streaming content,” said Spotify’s chief premium business officer Alex Norstrom. “We are proud to announce Spotify as our newest strategic partner – they’re an iconic brand in music streaming and a proven leader in reaching and engaging young consumers,” added Hulu SVP and head of distribution and partnerships Tim Connolly.
Even better news for consumers is that both streaming services aren't done with their deal-making. They're supposedly working on other such bundled discounts that could be made public before the end of the year. If you're not a Spotify user, Apple Music, Tidal and other services have similar student plans to offer, but they all come sans the Hulu subscription.
The announcement also comes as somewhat of a surprise, seeing as Spotify had been experimenting with video content last year. It couldn’t find an audience for its original fare, but perhaps with Hulu now on board, the music streaming giant will be aided in their quest to broaden their skill set.
