Lupe Fiasco has treated fans to his second new release of 2023 so far. The new song, called "Checkin'" dropped last night. It was surprise-released at midnight after Lupe originally announced it would come out at noon today. The track features a hard-hitting beat and Lupe being as lyrically creative. The one surprising part is how much of it all is how much autotune is deployed over his vocals.
"Checkin'" is the second single Lupe FIasco has dropped this year. Back in April, he released "SentRock." The track was a collaboration with the artist of the same name who made a painting based on Lupe's lyrics. The resulting painting ultimately became the album cover of the single. Lupe teased the release of "Checkin'" last week on Twitter. In a discussion over the potential for making music using the new Apple Vision Pro Lupe still saw fit to remind fans that new material was going to come out.
Lupe Fiasco Checks In
Lupe Fiasco's most recent album DRILL MUSIC IN ZION dropped last year. The record saw the rapper interpreting the sound of drill music within his own style. Back in March, Lupe was named the Saybrook fellow at Yale. It's a further foray into education after he was given the title of visiting professor at MIT last year. After starting some beef with Kid Cudi earlier this year, Lupe took the opportunity to shout out some other rappers that he actually does like. Most notably he called Ja Rule his "favorite rapper" to the surprise of many of his fans.
Lupe Fiasco also made a tweet last week pledging his support for the 2024 election. He backed People's Party candidate Cornel West in a short statement posted to Twitter. Clearly, he's left more politically motivated than usual by the candidate's platform stating it will be the "first and only time" he votes. What do you think of Lupe Fiasco's new single? Quotable Lyrics:
Sometimes you gotta let go
Let a kid stand with no kick stand
