Boston Celtics all-star point guard Isaiah Thomas was given some tragic news earlier today, one day before his team is set to begin their opening playoff series against the Chicago Bulls. His 22-year-old sister, Chyna Thomas, died in a single-car accident in Federal Way, Washington at around 5 A.M.
Thomas received news of his sister's death after a team practice in the afternoon, reports ESPN. He was talking to a reporter when Avery Bradley, a teammate and fellow native of Tacoma, came out of the training room and removed him from the area. That was the last time reporters would see Thomas for the day.
Chyna's 1998 Toyota Camry drifted onto the shoulder of the road and traveled 50 feet before colliding with a large metal pole, according to police, who said that she had not been wearing a seatbelt. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Earlier tonight, a source close to Thomas told ESPN that the plan, for now, was for Thomas to play in tomorrow night's home game in Boston. The Celtics are the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, while the Bulls are seeded No. 8.
The Celtics issued the following statement about the tragic accident.
