It's been five years since we've received a project from Rapsody however, she's gearing up to end that five year streak with the upcoming project Laila's Wisdom. Now, she's dropped the leading single off the project "You Should Know" featuring Busta Rhymes.
Rapsody is one of the most underrated rappers, male or female. She keeps some of the heaviest bars on deck and has proven her capabilities to stand next to some of the best emcees. "You Should Know" is a testament to her skills. The first lady of North Carolina hip hop recruits 9th Wonder on the beat for an incredible match up.
The song starts off with a sample-heavy beat with knockin' drums as Rapsody goes in, dropping bar after bar, hitting some braggadocious lyrics that's meant to leave any rapper shook of her abilities. The song chops up Goodie Mob's "Cell Therapy" and begins on a very heavy note. However, as the beat switches up towards the end, Busta comes in with a memorable verse. While as of recent, many of Busta's guest appearances often is over some uptempo beats, Rapsody taps Busta Rhymes for his "Barry White shit." As he raps over some smooth, jazz influenced production, he spits a very sultry and intimate verse for the women. It's an interesting switch especially since the first half starts much harder than the second.
With Laila's Wisdom on the way, it's no doubt that Rapsody is about to kick things off and "You Should Know" is an incredible first single to catch the attention of the hip hop community. Since her first album, she's been dropping EP's and mixtapes. However, now Laila's Wisdom will be the first project she releases under Roc Nation. Hopefully, we end up seeing a Rapsody/Jay-Z collab on her upcoming project.
Laila's Wisdom is due out on September 22nd.
Quotable Lyrics
Flow so much I need lifeguards
Not like Rikers, them some whole new bars
Influenced by many but I’m a whole new star, yeah
There’s levels to this but I’m a whole new floor
