Yesterday, TDE President Dave Free tweeted out the date "09.02.16," perhaps signaling at an imminent release date for a project from one of the label's signees. Fans of the LA powerhouse speculated that the next TDE release might come from Ab-Soul, SZA, or Isaiah Rashad, none of whom have put out a project since 2014. Signs now point toward the lattermost artist, as the young Tennessee rapper has shared a new single, "Free Lunch," on Apple Music. It's Rashad's first single since January's "Smile," which was preceded by "Nelly," released last September.
"Free Lunch" puts the sharp and precise flows of Rashad atop a slow-burning instrumental that incorporates the jazz and funk sounds that have been alive in Kendrick's recent work, albeit with a flavor that's more Southern than West Coast. Whenever it arrives, Rashad's debut album, the follow-up to his (album-quality) Cilvia Demo EP, should be a special body of work. It's been a consistent run for TDE.
