ScHoolboy Q has solidified his place within the TDE camp as the gangster rapper, although his fanbase might not reflect his OG ways. Our host Baker recently sat down with Q to talk about how diverse his fanbase is, and revealed he just started working on the follow-up to his acclaimed album Oxymoron. The album has been nominated for Album of the Year by the BET Hip-Hop Awards, but as we learn in our interview, Q isn't looking to attend the show although he's grateful for the nods. The rapper also details to Baker his three necessities when it comes to studio sessions. Finally, will Q be on the new Kendrick Lamar album? We don't know (sorry to disappoint).
The bucket hat-wearing rapper (or in the instance above, towel-wearing) is still in the very early stages of his next LP, and says he's not sure about the direction. "I dunno yet. I just started yesterday, so I really don't know. I mean I know what I wanna do, but things change. I knew what I wanted to do with Oxymoron in 2012 but I didn't drop it til 2014."
He continued, "It's another journey I'm about to take to finish another album, no telling when I'll finish it, but my plans is for it to drop it next year. I'm not promoting it right now, I'm still on my Oxymoron wave, but I'm definitely working on my second album."
As for his studio needs, they're pretty simple: "People to shut the fuck up, that's one. People to get the fuck out, that's two. And engineer not to stand next to me when I'm writing, that's three. So basically me in the studio by myself. Anybody that knows me knows I don't like people in the studio when I'm working."
