The Minnesota Vikings have announced that they won't be picking up the 2017 option on Adrian Peterson's contract, making the Pro Bowl running back an unrestricted free agent starting March 9th.
Peterson was reportedly due $18 million but will now get to choose which backfield he wants to play in when free agency begins.
The soon to be 32-year old running back has spent his entire 10-year career in Minnesota.
Vikings GM Rick Spielman released the following statement regarding AP, per NFL.com,
"Adrian is an important part of the Minnesota Vikings organization," said Vikings general manager Rick Spielman in a statement released by the team. "We will continue to have conversations with his representatives and leave our future options open while determining what is best for both parties moving forward."
Last month Peterson was asked which teams he would like to play for should he hit the open market and he listed the New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Houston Texans, although he made it clear that is number one priority would be signing with a Super Bowl contender.
