The vacant creative director role at fashion line Givenchy has been the subject of much attention recently as people speculate on who will be selected to fill Riccardo Tisci’s large and fashionable shoes. A recent report from WWD pegged Virgil Abloh, Off-White founder and creative director for Kanye West, as a strong candidate for the position. Today, WWD rescinded their previous report after Givenchy denied having any talks with Abloh for their creative director position.
Disappointing news for fans of the rising young designer. It’s common practice for companies to remain silent on personnel speculation, much the same way sports teams deny any trade rumor (regardless of how accurate). However, it appears Abloh is truly not in the picture, given the french fashion house’s statement that, “Mr. Abloh was not approached by the house and is not to join the organization.”
We likely won’t have to wait long to find out who is taking the position. Givenchy says their, “new creative organization will be communicated shortly.” We’d be surprised if the announcement didn’t come during New York Fashion Week, which is ongoing until Friday, February 17.
Virgil Abloh's Off-White brand recently dropped the second half of their Spring/Summer 2017 collection.
