While Freeway is currently out on tour HotNewHipHop was able to catch up with him before his show at Underworld. We discussed the difference between a major label versus an independent label, he gave us some details on his upcoming projects (which include a mixtape, an album, and a joint album with Brother Ali), his favorite pair of sneakers, his favorite character from The Wire and more!
On changing from major labels to an independent label over the years, Freeway says the difference is freedom,“It's just the freedom, it's like, I'm in control of everything I do, and actually right now, I'm totally independent, like everything that we doin' right now is totally independent, like we still a family with Rhymesayers.”
He told us about the next project he is dropping, a mixtape, “we gunna be dropping a new project called Freedom of Speech, and its independent, sponsored by Karmaloop Music and Rocksmith clothing line, and we just grindin'.”
Freeway's album, “Diamond in the Ruff,” is also in the works, Freeway says that he's probably releasing that in November, “It's gunna be crazy, production from Just Blaze, Bink dawg, and for those that don't know those were two producers that was real, played a major part in my career, in the beginning with my first album. So we got some new music on there, it's gunna be some crazy features to look out for, I got Marsha Ambrosius on there, Styles P, um, who else is on there? It's crazy, just stay tuned.”
Freeway lists his dream collabs, “Dre, Eminem, Alicia Keys, Nas,” and says that a collaboration with Atmosphere, who is also on the Rhymesayers label, is something that will happen in the near future.
As well, Freeway shares with us that Brother Ali and him are working on a joint project, “me and Brother Ali are actually working on an album together too, should be coming sometime soon.”
