The Miami Heat have announced that they'll be retiring Shaquille O'Neal's #32 jersey on December 22nd during their game against... the Los Angeles Lakers.
According to the official press release, the Heat will be retiring Shaq's jersey at half time in a ceremony that will include a video presentation and the raising of the #32 retirement banner to the rafters of the AmericanAirlines Arena. Shaq played in 3 1/2 seasons with Miami after being traded by the Lakers, and helped them win their first NBA title alongside Dwyane Wade in 2006.
The only other Heat players who have had their jerseys retired are Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway.
The Lakers will also be unveiling a Shaq statue outside of the Staples Center at some point during this season and it's no coincidence that Miami chose to have this ceremony while his former team was in town to witness it.
