Drake and Eminem were also nominated for the award.

In the ongoing debate about whether or not Iggy Azalea is "hip hop," the judges at the American Music Awards have cast their vote as an overwhelming "yes." Beating out Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP 2, as well as Drake's Nothing Was The Same, Iggy's The New Classic took home the ceremony's award for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Album.

“This award is the first award I’ve ever won in my whole life,” Iggy exclaimed. T.I. proudly stood beside his protege as she delivered the remainder of her speech. Strangely, the line isn't exactly true: 2014 alone has brought Iggy several Teen Choice Awards, an MTV EMA, and the “Who Blew Up Award” at the BET Hip-Hop Awards. "It means so much that I can stand here against Eminem and Drake and come out with this," she continued.

Hip-hop fans on Twitter have reacted negatively to Iggy's win, drawing comparisons to Macklemore winning last year's Grammy over Kendrick Lamar

The New Classic is also 2014's biggest-selling hip-hop release.
