French Montana joins Charts Don't Lie this week, with his debut album Excuse My French. French, Diddy and the whole Bad Boy team went hard with promo for this one, rounded up the biggest features in the game, but the album wasn't able to move more than 50k opening week. With the decrease of hip-hop album sales forever waning, this isn't horrible, but it isn't the "classic" numbers French may have been expecting. Although French has boasted about the perfection on Excuse My French, when discussing album sales, he acknowledged the album may be a "slow burn" given the state of hip-hop sales. This could be the case, but it could also be that Excuse My French falls off just as quickly as it debuted-- what do you predict?
1) French Montana— Excuse My French: After a long wait, and a lot of hype, French Montana finally released his Bad Boy debut, Excuse My French, on May 21st. Although French seemed certain the record would be a classic, it has pretty average sales. We’ll have to see what the aftermath is, but for now, French sold around 49k units of his album (which matches with the projections), debuting at #4 on the Billboard 200 charts. For those who copped the album, what were your thoughts? Are the sales about right, or should French have moved more?
2) Justin Timberlake— The 20/20 Experience: Justin Timberlake stays strong on the charts, moving down ever so slowly. This week he dropped one spot, from the #7 to #8. The 20/20 Experience sold another 42,853 copies over the past seven days.
3) Macklemore & Ryan Lewis—The Heist: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis come in at #17 this week, which is down from last week. The Heist pushed another 24k copies off the shelves, while their new single “Can’t Hold Us,” spent its fourth consecutive week at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
4) Lil Wayne— I Am Not A Human Being II: Weezy F made a slight drop from last week’s placement, sitting at #24. The YMCMB release sold under 14k this week.
5) Kendrick Lamar— good kid, m.A.A.d city: Kendrick Lamar’s critically acclaimed debut album continues to chart within the top 50, after disappearing below it for a period of time. This week the Compton native is at #41, a few spots lower than last week. He sold slightly less than 9k of GKMC over the week.
6) Tyga— Hotel California: Although Tyga’s Hotel California album has dropped below the top 50 of the Billboard 200 chart, it actually rose up some spots from last week. The increase in sales lands Tyga at the #62 spot, up from #67. He’s been charting for seven weeks.
In related news, Daft Punk were able to nab the #1 spot on the charts this week, with their new album Random Access Memories moving over 320k copies. Rihanna still has her spot within the top 50, although she may not be in there for too much longer, but this week Unapologetic comes in at #39. Kid Cudi’s INDICUD dropped even further from last week’s #58, coming in at #64 this week.
