This week we see Tyga make an entry onto the charts, while Tyler, the Creator, whose album dropped last week, fell quite a bit from his impressive #3 debut. Tyga's Hotel California is definitely a venture into the more typical sound that has defined Tyler's career, with plenty of DJ Mustard-esque beats and the accompanying flow. However, maybe this signature sound isn't the signature fans are looking for after all. The album debuted at #7, which is not as good as his last LP, Careless World. Careless World managed a #4 spot, and sold almost 10,000 more copies, while it definitely featured a more diverse sound. Although it's possible the sound has nothing to do with it, as can be the case when it comes to album sales. Could it be a lack of promotion? A diminishing fan-base? Or just the general lack of sales albums are doing these days? The latter is where rappers often like to put the blame, as French Montana said in a recent interview when asked about his expectations for his debut, Excuse My French. Whatever the case may be, check out the numbers for this weeks' chart-toppers below.
1) Justin Timberlake—The 20/20 Experience: JT finally falls a little from grace, but only two spots. This week the chart-topper fell to #3 on the charts, still moving an impressive 97, 757 units of The 20/20 Experience.
2) Tyga—Hotel California: Tyga’s new album does pretty much as well as it was projected to, moving 51,466 copies of the YMCMB release off shelves in the first week. While these numbers aren’t too high, Tyga has said he’s only worried about the final count of sales. The sales were enough to get T-Raww that #7 spot on the charts. We’ll have to see how the LP holds up in the coming weeks.
3) Lil Wayne— I Am Not A Human Being II: Although it seems to be generally agreed that IANAHB2 isn’t exactly Weezy’s best effort, the album nonetheless has charted relatively well. Still, Wayne isn’t pushing numbers like he used too. This week the album dropped to #9 and moved around 39k.
4) Macklemore & Ryan Lewis—The Heist: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis dropped a new visual this week for their next single, “Can’t Hold Us,” and we’ll have to see if it receives the same success as “Thrift Shop,” and gives the album yet another boost. For now, The Heist is sitting at #15 with 26,536 units in sales.
5) Rihanna—Unapologetic: Rih Rih hasn’t made any moves since last week, keeping the #20 spot all to herself. The Barbados singer sold 18,441 copies of Unapologetic over the past week.
6) Tyler, The Creator—WOLF: Tyler’s WOLF album made a nice debut at the #3 spot, but has quickly dropped this past week down to #21. The Columbia Records release sold another 18,310 copies this week to OF enthusiasts. We'll have to see how WOLF hold up in the long run.
This week we find West Coast native Kendrick Lamar is absent from Charts Don’t Lie. His critically acclaimed album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, fell off as new-comers like Tyler and Tyga took a spot instead. Nonetheless, the album is still within the top 50 of Billboard’s 200, at #44, after 25 weeks of charting.
