A reboot is in the works.

James Gunn was fired by Disney after decade-old tweets resurfaced where he made distasteful jokes. Gunn helmed the first two Guardians Of the Galaxy movies, and they were a huge success for Disney and Marvel. Still, his internet quips were offensive enough to convince Disney head Bob Iger to cut Gunn off for good. Warner Bros and DC Comics were eager to scoop Gunn up though, and he bounced back with Marvel's rival.

According to The Hollywood ReporterGunn is in talks to direct the Suicide Squad sequel. "The pic has the title of The Suicide Squad and is not being labeled a direct sequel but as a relaunch," wrote Borys Kit for THR. Sources claim that Gunn is planning to take the franchise in a new direction, using mostly new characters instead of following the previous film. Suicide Squad starred Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, and Jared Leto and killed it at the box office. It made $746 Million worldwide, but fans and critics despised it. Gunn was already hired to write the script, so Warner Bros' move to lock him down as a director doesn't come as a surprise. The Suicide Squad is slated for a Summer 2021 release, so it may be a while before we get any new information.
