"So...you're a talking Pikachu who's addicted to coffee?"
Just yesterday, we received the first real news about Ryan Reynolds' upcoming film Detective Pikachu, but today Warner Bros. has given fans a first look into their Pokémon universe. The movie surrounds Harry Goodman, a prominent detective who mysteriously goes missing after a crash. His son, Tim (Justice Smith), is a former Pokémon trainer who one day gets a visit from Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds), Harry's partner. Pikachu enlists Tim to help him find Harry and solve the case of why his partner disappeared, initially with much resistance. However, as the two investigate throughout Ryme City, they uncover a plot that not even they were ready for.
The trailer for the film shows that this isn't going to be some frilly flick for the kids. Reynolds was undeniably tapped for his ability to deliver humor, making this movie an action-mystery-science fiction-comedy that's good for the entire family. If Smith looks familiar to you, it's because he should. The 23-year-old actor has an impressive, and growing, resumé that includes features in Paper Towns with Cara Delevingne, Netflix's The Get Down with Shameik Moore, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom alongside Chris Pratt.
In a previous parody of Outside of Actor's Studio starring Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively, the pair joked that he immersed himself for an entire year into all things Pikachu. “I vanish in my roles,” Reynolds said. “This is a funny anecdote. I was on my way to pick up my daughters from school when I heard that I got the role. Well, I didn’t show up at school, because Detective Pikachu, he doesn’t know who those two little girls are.” He also said, "I tried to lose 182 pounds to match his weight until doctors intervened."
