Before his arrest earlier this year, YNW Melly was one of the hottest up-and-coming artists from Florida. The young rapper has been accused of murdering his two friends YNW Juvy and YNW Sakchaser with gruesome details being released several months ago. Melly has pleaded not guilty to the charges but he remains locked up with his associate YNW Bortlen. Several days before he was arrested, Melly stopped by our office to chat about the creation of "Murder On My Mind," the hit song that many are saying is a confession. This week, the producer of the track sat down with Genius to deconstruct the beat, going behind the controversy and claiming that Melly is innocent.
"When I first heard about the allegations, I automatically knew that, you know, it was fake news," said SMKEXCLSV. "I know Melly. It's not a confession, this was already a song that was made three years ago." SMKEXCLSV has a point; the hit record was recorded way before Sakchaser and Juvy were found dead so the timelines don't entirely match up. As for his reasoning as to why Melly is innocent, we've got to say he's not successfully convincing.
"This has nothing to do with what Melly is going through right now," said the producer. "I just know him and he's not like that." Watch the video above and check out our interview with Melly below.
