With all the anticipation and hype surrounding Duke-North Carolina Wednesday night, things quickly took a turn for the worse when superstar Zion Williamson got hurt just seconds into the game. Zion grabbed a rebound 36 seconds in and literally planted so hard that his foot went through his shoe, resulting an injury in his knee. Zion grabbed his right knee in pain and gingerly walked off the court, before taking himself into the locker room where he wouldn't return. An MRI was given to find out the serious of the injury, but we’ll have to wait to find out the results.
ESPN made an announcement right before halftime that Zion would not return to the game, citing his “knee” being the reason. For what it’s worth, Williamson was wearing the Nike PG 2.5, Thunder star Paul George's signature shoe from the fall, in a Duke exclusive colorway.
Following his injury, several NBA stars took to social media to react to the injury & give Zion some words of encouragement, including LeBron James, Donovan Michell, Trae Young, Terry Rozier, and more.
