Blade Runner wasn't a hit when it landed in theaters back in 1982. After leaving theaters though, it garnered a cult following. The sci-fi noir flick aged well with time, and a sequel was released. Blade Runner 2049 continued the story of Rick Deckard, and dove deeper into the idea of replicants. The androids and their evolution were at the center of the film. As reported by Deadline, the Blade Runner universe will live on through a new anime series.
The new series will be titled Blade Runner – Black Lotus. Crunchyroll and Adult Swim will produce and distribute the new anime series alongside Alcon Television. The series will take place in 2032, but all other details are being kept under wraps. The year is a big enough hint, allowing for several characters from Blade Runner 2049 to make appearances. Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) and Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) will direct the entire first season. Adult Swim has worldwide distribution rights for the English dubbed versions, except for in Asia. Toonami will host the show, continuing their penchant for carrying Adult Swim and Cartoon Network's anime shows. Crunchyroll will manage worldwide streaming.
“I first saw Blade Runner in 1982, at age 11. It has remained one of the defining films of my life,” stated Jason DeMarco, SVP/Creative Director of Adult Swim On-air. “To be able to explore more of this universe, with the incredible talent we have on board, is a dream come true.”
