Mariah Carey released a project that would stun her listeners in 2001. Glitter offered a completely different sonic universe in comparison to her previous releases as it was packed with dance tracks that explored 1980's disco. The soundtrack was considered a complete failure. Her label canceled her $100 million contract and dropped her altogether. Despite this history, the record is now charting on iTunes and Mariah is pleasantly surprised.
Glitter reached the 8th position on the iTunes album charts this Wednesday morning and eventually rose to the 6th spot. The reason for the project's emergence from the ashes of a critical and commercial wipeout is mysterious. Even the diva herself expressed surprise when she shared the news on social media.
Carey attributes the unexpected redemption to her fan army that she dubbed "the lambily."
Not sure what's happening but I love it! The lambily is amazing at getting #JusticeForGlitter
The soundtrack debuted at number 7 on the Billboard Charts in 2001 with first-week sales of 116 000 copies. This achievement was considered a disappointment in comparison to Carey's 1999 Rainbow, which debuted with first-week sales of 323 000. The retro-influenced album featuring Hip Hop artists like Ludacris, Busta Rhymes, Fabolous, and Ja Rule, went on to earn a gold certification.
