XXXTentacion was one of the most controversial artists to emerge over the last few years as his complicated past has left a bad taste in some people's mouths. He remains a polarizing figure even after his passing as new recordings have been obtained that dive even further into his abusive past. In the months leading to his death, XXXTentacion was vocal about how he was trying to change, starting a foundation in his name and donating to women's shelters in his city. Vic Mensa has tried to shine a light on the glorification of domestic abuse in hip-hop for months and when he spit a cypher at the BET Hip-Hop Awards, he referenced X's situation, leading to tons of online backlash. With his new project coming out soon, the Chicagoan stopped by The Breakfast Club when the XXX topic came up.
While he admits that he felt a need to explain parts of the perceived diss, he believes he just hit people in a soft spot. He touched on that while revealing that he apologized to X's mother after the fact, saying, "I actually reached out to his mother personally. We pre-tape those things. I didn't know she would be there. At the end of the day, I do think that the conversation that I was trying to bring up and that I did bring up is a super necessary conversation."
He continued by stating how important his message was, telling the hosts, "Maybe the way of going about it was not the best for the time, but I think the conversation is one that had to be had - talking about violence against women and misogyny in hip-hop, but particularly violence against women. I had a lot of people on the low reach out to me and thank me for that."
Vic Mensa's new project Hooligans is set to release this week.
