The 80's have been the ongoing inspiration for Stranger Things since the first season dropped in 2016. The Duffer Brothers, who created the series, are set to continue drawing influences from the 80's to help create an authentic feel for the show, which is based in the same time period. David Harbour, who plays Jim Hopper on Stranger Things, recently spoke with Variety about the upcoming third season of the series. Harbour began by breaking down the mindstate of his character.
“Clearly, he’s a dude who’s stuck in the late ’70s and he’s an old-school guy, so I don’t think he likes to see the world change. But there are certain things you need to get in Hawkins that you can’t get at Melvald’s General Store," Harbour stated. He also revealed that Chevy Chase’s 1985 comedy Fletch would influence the third season of Stranger Things. “The Duffers are so specific each year with the movies," he said. "And Fletch is one movie we get to play around and have some fun with this season, which you wouldn’t expect from Stranger Things and you wouldn’t expect from the Spielberg universe and you certainly wouldn’t expect from a darker season." In Fletch, Chase plays a journalist who gets in over his head when he stumbles upon a murder case. A journalist, played by Jake Busey, will be making an appearance in the new season of Stranger Things.
