"Venom" pulls big numbers on Thursday night previews.

Go see Venom. Ignore the reviews that claim the film is trash and check it out for yourself. Being an avid comic book reader and fan for most of my life, I will attest to the fact the film is great. Not Avengers: Infinity War great, not even Iron-Man or Black Panther great, but still an amazing film. It falls in line with Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, or Ant-Man as being a film that keeps the scope small, delivers a good origin story, and capitalizes of knowing its own strengths and weaknesses. The relationship between Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and Venom is the highlight, while the humor and action sequences are a delight to watch.

Despite the horrible reviews from critics, Venom previewed at 3,543 North American locations on Thursday night to much success. The Sony film raked in $10 million dollars, breaking the record for October movie previews. Venom will expand to play at 4,250 theaters by Friday night and is expected to pull in between $50-$70 million. The film had a budget of $100 million, so the ability to recoup more than half of that in the first weekend would play well for Sony. Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, and Jenny Slate.
