"This Is America," the Childish Gambino song that sent to world into a spiral when the music video dropped in conjunction with Gambino's SNL appearance. The video, which became an overnight viral sensation, places a heavy focus on gun violence, but even more so on dancing. Out of all the choreography Gambino displays in the video, his performance of BlocBoy JB's "Shoot" dance was an instant standout.
"The video is real-deal lit. When I first heard it, I saw the video," BlocBoy says in an interview with Billboard. "Soon as he started hitting the dance, I was like, 'Oh, word!' I didn’t know he knew how to dance like that."
BlocBoy JB, the Memphis rapper who recently delivered his newest mixtape, Simi, had a viral moment of his own, when a dance for his song "Shoot" exploded through the internet. It wasn't long after that Drake hit him up, and the two of them crafted BlocBoy's biggest hit, "Look Alive."
When asked how he would rate Gambino's shoot dance, BlocBoy was impressed, but fair in his judgement. "Nobody can get a 10," BlocBoy says. "He’ll get a 9. Only me gets the 10."
Dancing isn't the only thing that BlocBoy contributed to the song, as he's featured among a list of other rappers including: Young Thug, 21 Savage, Rae Sremmurd, and the Migos, who contributed ad-libs to the song.
"[They] made it seem like an organ [donation]," said BlocBoy. "That beat was so motherfucking hard, and that’s all that was. As soon as I heard that motherfucker, I was like, 'Man, I ain’t going to lie, I want to rap on his motherfucker.'"
