The Washington Redskins have agreed on a trade to acquire QB Alex Smith from the Chiefs.

Well here’s a trade we didn’t see happening. Out of nowhere Tuesday night, the Kansas City chiefs agreed to trade quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins according to ESPN and multiple reports.

Sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Smith and the Redskins reached an agreement on a four-year contract extension. Chis Mortensen added that Smith will average about $23.5 million per year in new money on the extension with approximately $70 million in guaranteed money. However, it’s unlikely that all $70 million will be received.

The trade itself cannot be completed until the new league year begins on March 14. In exchange for Smith, ESPN reports that a third-round pick and an unidentified player will be going back to the Chiefs.

ESPN says that at least six other teams expressed some form of interest in Smith, but the Redskins were the winners.

As for Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins, it’s evident that he’s going to hit the free agent market in March after having been franchise tagged in each of the last two seasons with Washington. Rumors say that Cousins could end up in New York as a Jet, as he reportedly spoke highly of new Jets offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates earlier Tuesday, dropping the first hint of a possible union.

After the Smith’s departure, the Chiefs will move forward with last year’s first-round draft pick, Patrick Mahomes, as their quarterback of the future. Time will only tell to see how this all plays out.

Check out the early reports (below) and let us know your thoughts on the trade.
