Alex Smith has reportedly agreed to a four-year $94 million contract extension... with the Washington Redskins. Last night the Kansas City Chiefs agreed to trade the 33-year old QB to the Skins in exchange for 22-year old cornerback Kendall Fuller, as well as a third round draft pick.
As part of Smith's $94 million extension with Washington, $71 million is guaranteed.
The trade cannot officially go through until the first day of the league year, March 14, but both sides have agreed in principle. Obviously, this also means Washington's quarterback for the last six seasons, Kirk Cousins, will hit the free agent market this off-season. A number of teams, including the Jets, Broncos, Browns, Dolphins, Cardinals, Bills etc. are all potential landing spots.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Fuller is the player that made the Alex Smith trade possible. KC reportedly views Fuller as a genuine starter, to go along with the third-round pick they’re receiving as part of the deal.
Fuller had himself a roller coaster of a night as he found out the news with all of us on twitter.
