Star Wars IX is just over a year away from hitting theaters, and that might seem like an eternity for some. In the movie production world, that means things need to start moving, and fast. The ninth sequential Star Wars film has landed back in the hands of J.J. Abrams after Colin Trevorrow backed out because of creative differences. Lucasfilm went back to Abrams, who crafted The Force Awakens, and revealed that he yearned to do more Star Wars films in the future. He has been slowly adding up the pieces for the film, and now it is being reported that a new warrior female role is being discussed with Keri Russell.
Keri Russell and Abrams have worked together before on Mission Impossible 3. According to Variety, Russell is in talks to play an undisclosed role in Star Wars IX that requires "action-heavy fight scenes." With that in mind, it looks like Russell will be heading straight into battle. Since Disney took over the Star Wars franchise, they have brought several female characters into the series. Daisy Ridley's Rey is the main character of the sequential series, while the spin-off flick Rogue One places Jyn Erso in the heroine seat. It will be exciting to see how Russell will play into the film, and which side of the fight she will be on. Star Wars IX hits theaters on December 20, 2019.
