It can be hard to keep up with all the superhero movies coming out this year. Marvel has already unleashed Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War on the world, and Ant-Man and The Wasp will undoubtedly shake up the box office as well. Since Marvel Studios decided to avoid the holiday season this year, and there are no Star Wars films coming this Christmas, there was an open slot for a big movie to enter its name in the holiday race. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is that film.
The latest Spider-Man film does not take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it has no ties to anything we've seen on screen from Spidey before. The upcoming film will be animated, and trailers have already impressed both comic book critics and casual sci-fi viewers. Shameik Moore stars as Miles Morales, the Afro-Latino Spider-Man from another universe. How exactly Marvel will bring the universes together for this film are still a mystery, but as the name of the movie implies, several reiterations of Spider-Man will show up at one point. Spider-Gwen and Peter Parker's Spider-Man have already made their debut in the trailers, but now it is being reported that a more obscure Spidey is joining the cast as well.
According to Collider, Nicolas Cage is set to play Spider-Man Noir in the upcoming film. Spider-Man Noir was not around for very long in the comic books, and his story exists in the Marvel Noir universe which takes place in the early 1900's. Draped in all black with large goggles, Spider-Man Noir is a violent and dark version of Peter Parker, who is more of a vigilante than a hero. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse stars Shameik Moore, Brian Tyree Henry, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, and Liev Schreiber and hits theaters on December 14th.
