During yesterday's 110-94 win over Cleveland, San Antonio Spurs guard Patty Mills was the subject of racist taunts by a member of the home crowd. Patty's parent's are pacific islanders, native to Australia. The taunts were by nature completely ignorant to the fact.
The incident took place while Mills was at the free throw line at the 2:29 mark of the fourth quarter. The arena's sound system was able to pick out the screaming fan's tirade in its entirety:
“Hey, Jamaican dog. They want their bobsledder back. Hey Mills, Jamaica just called; they want their bobsledder back.”
Patty showed a willingness to address the incident on social media. In the post which also provided footage of the affair, he explained his mixed heritage and a commitment to leading these conversations aimed at a greater understanding of indigenous affairs.
Aside from the negative, Sunday marked an important night for Mills, as he climbed to 4th on the San Antonio Spurs all-time three-pointers made list, with his 657th in his career. He also finished with 11 points on 3-of-9 shooting in a rare start against Lebron and the Cavs.
