Future is currently in the process of expanding his range beyond just rap music, working with filmmaker Director X on the upcoming Superfly remake. The movie, which will be based on the original from 1972, already boasts talented cast members Trevor Jackson and Jason Mitchell, with a new member being announced today by Deadline.
The latest cast member to sign on to the Superfly project is Allen Maldonado, who currently has a recurring role on the popular TV series black-ish. He adds his name to a group that will be performing Alex Tse's screenplay, although there's no indication as to how closely this new movie will follow its blaxploitation ancestor, a crime drama that centers around an African American cocaine dealer who attempts one last score before walking away from the business.
Director X previously told Deadline that he wanted to helm this project in part because of how relevant he thought the story was to today's culture. "The pursuit of the American Dream is eternal," he said. "Everyone's always on the hustle because you've got to be… and Superfly is about pulling off the ultimate hustle to get out of the game." Maldonado is also slated to star in The Last O.G., a new TBS series with Tiffany Haddish and Tracy Morgan. Jordan Peele helped create the show, which will debut in the spring.
