Actor Trevor Jackson, Director X, actors Lex Scott Davis and Jason Mitchell attend the CinemaCon 2018 Gala Opening Night Event: Sony Pictures Highlights its 2018 Summer and Beyond Films at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace during CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners, on April 23, 2018 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Director X has a hit on his hands.

Director X is ready to bring the world his take on the 1972 blaxploitation flick Superfly. The film has moved cities from Harlem to Atlanta, where Trevor Jackson from Grown-ish plays the role of Youngblood Priest. Priest wants to get out of the game, but it's going to take hard work to reach that point.  The all-star cast also includes Big Boi, Jason Mitchell, Michael K. Williams, and Allen Maldonado.

A new trailer for the film has been released, and the first preview came via Future (who is executive producing the soundtrack for the film) in March. The footage looks like the cinematography was the main focus to thematically tie the theme together. ATLien culture has a strong influence.  “Atlanta today is kind of what Harlem was back then in the ’70s,” Director X told Entertainment Weekly. “The music of the city is the music of the world. The culture of the city is the culture of the world. Trends that happen in Atlanta reverberate around the planet. So when we were looking for a place to set this movie again, Atlanta made a lot of sense. I mean, there’s a Whole Foods on 125th St. [in Harlem]. It’s just not the same. Times have changed. We’ve had to move with the times.”

Superfly graces theaters on June 15.
