We've got our first benches clearing brawl of the MLB season, courtesy of the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres.
In the first inning, Rockies shortstop Trevor Story was hit by a pitch. In the second inning, Colorado's starting pitcher German Marquez retaliated by beaning San Diego's right fielder Hunter Renfroe. In the third inning, all hell broke loose.
Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado had a fastball whizz behind him and he immediately took off in pursuit of Padres pitcher Luis Perdomo. The right hander was in no mood to throw hands however and he threw his glove at the charging Arenado before back peddling his way into the scrum of players.
Both benches cleared as Arenado swung wildly at Perdomo but it's tough to tell if he was able to connect during the melee.
Once the dust had settled, a total of five players were ejected from the game. Arenado, Rockies left fielder Gerardo Parra and starting pitcher German Marquez were all tossed, in addition to Perdomo and Padres catcher A.J. Ellis.
According to Yahoo Sports, in seven games between the two teams this season, six different batters have been hit by a pitch including A.J. Ellis, Christian Villanueva, Jose Pirela and Manuel Margot, who were beaned prior to today’s game.
