It has only been out for a minute, but Will Smith's Netflix original "Bright" has already emerged as one of the year's more divisive films. Critics haven't exactly been feeling it, but many fans enjoyed the genre-bending urban fantasy, so much so that Netflix has already ordered a sequel. And while some have praised the film's use of fantasy to depict racial conflict, Chance The Rapper wasn't exactly convinced. In fact, Chano went on a miniature Twitter rant, breaking down his problems with "Bright's" allegorical racism. After asking his followers what they thought about the orc lynching scene, Chance proceeded to get even more in depth on the topic.
"I always feel a lil cheated when I see allegorical racism in movies cause that racism usually stems from human emotion or tolerance but not by law or systems the way it is in real life," writes Chance. "The characters in #Bright live in a timeline where racism is gone... cause we hate ork now." He also attempts to rationalize the director and writer's choices, but ultimately remains unconvinced.
