Celebrate this "holey" holiday.

For years people have joked about how much police officers love donuts. According to TIMEthe joke began after WWII, when police officers who worked long hours at odd times had little food options. Stocking up on donuts at the late-night diners became a habit for many officers working those crazed hours, and so the joke was born.

Today is National Donut Day and the Houston Police Department decided to play into the "cops love donuts" joke. On Twitter, the Houston Police Department shared a picture of officers lining up in front of Shipley's, waiting for it to open. The caption on the post reads, "HPD Northeast night shift officers and @K9TRex waiting on #donutday @ShipleyDo_Nuts."

The officers must have been impatient, because they shared a second photo of two cops with their K9 looking through the window of the closed Shipley's hopefully.

Almost every breakfast food store is offering free donuts today. Dunkin Donuts will give customers one free classic donut when a drink is purchased. Krispy Kreme stores are offering one free donut with no purchase necessary, and even Walmart is feeling the holiday cheer by offering one free glazed donut at US locations.
