19 years after its release, Three 6 Mafia's "Who Run It" has taken on a new life as a freestyle instrumental. It all started with G Herbo's chance encounter with the beat on a radio appearance. The Chicago rapper came at the beat with an unconventional flow that re-envisioned the beat for a new generation. The clip went viral, and soon enough, every rapper wanted a piece of it. Many younger emcees including Lil Uzi Vert, Trippie Redd, Lil Yachty, and 21 Savage were inspired to do their own remixes of the song, but it also brought some more experienced rappers into the fold, including some of the original Three 6 Mafia members and affiliates.
This is just one of a few arguments for Three 6 Mafia's influence on today's generation of rappers. They have been a popular sample source in recent history, with ASAP Ferg's "Plain Jane," G-Eazy's "No Limit," Rae Sremmurd's "Power Glide" and Cardi B's "Bickenhead" all flipping samples from their catalogue (in Cardi's case it was close affiliate Project Pat).
