My Heart Races on is NOT A BREAKUP SONG YOU FUCKING IDIOT!!! Did you even listen to the album?! That song is one of the deepest songs Wayne has ever made. He contemplates his career, wealth and family in it.

It was proven that Nas had Jay Electronica and Dead Prez as writers for "Untitled" yet no one gave a fuck. Kanye had about a dozen writers for MBDTF and no one blinks an eye. It is revealed that Drake doesn't write all of his stuff, and you all lose your mind.
Even if Drake has some help here and there, doesn't mean he doesn't write his own shit.

Very well written review until the last paragraph. Sure the album (I won't call it a mixtape as it is for sale) is more oriented towards Future's sound, but you can't argue that Drake needed this more than future. Drake is the most famous hiphop artist right now with the entire industry's reigns in his grip. I don't think either Future or Drake needed this, but rather they made this entire project for the fans, which is something that should be greatly appreciated.

Brilliantly written review. I was doubting the album, but after reading your review the album artistically makes so much more sense. Great analysis.

This is such a well written review that it was a pleasure just to read it. The astute analysis of Kendrick's work and its themes and concepts was also very well done..
HiphopDX used to be the definitive place for reviews, but you guys have left them far behind.
Great work, Patrick Lyon.

It's funny because Kendrick's fans hate on Wayne as if he can't rap worth shit and you have got Kendrick himself declaring Wayne as one of the greatest and a huge influence on him.
I am a fan of both and it's great seeing Kendrick give respect where its due. On a related note, Eminem has also called Wayne of the greatest in the rap game.

He's right. From what I know both Illmatic and Reasonable Doubt didn't really connect with the masses when they released. Big and Pac meanwhile were larger than life at that time.

Respect to the reviewer for calling out Cole's lame lines and his 'nice guy' bullshit on songs. Lots of reviewers for some reason give him a pass on that just because he is an above average lyricist.

Great list. It's just that Wayne has so many classic songs with insane lyricism that some favorites were bound to be missed. I would have put Mr Carter up there, as it is the song where Wayne collaborates with his idol Jay-Z and Jay passes the throne to him. Wayne's lyrics are on point on the song and Jay doesn't disappoint as well.

This is one of the most well written article on hip hop I have read in a long time. Couldn't agree with you more that he sounded the most himself on Relapse and I think that was his best work since he's return. The recovery arc was completed in Recovery and since then he has been sort of lost, writing a bunch of motivational songs. With this album we can see that he has found new content to write about, and he sounds re energized and revitalized.

Nicki is close to a nervous breakdown as Cardi B has taken over her spot. It had to happen eventually. She did reign for like seven years. People wanted something new and Cardi B was ready. The fact that Nicki hasn't released an album for four years, and that it has been being pushed back for almost two, makes it quite clear that her position is under threat.

Em murdered MGK. Pay attention to the lyrics and you will realize that Em rebutted everything MGK said on his diss, AND came with fire punchlines. And for those saying they expected more, Em may have held back as this was his first response. He probably has an Ether ready to go if MGK is stupid enough to reply. As it is, Em pretty much murdered MGK here.

Yelawolf's flow on the song, the storytelling, his amazing cadences and the highly original and poetic imagery makes this song a classic. I agree with the people calling it corny. Couldn't even get through the whole song. The whole concept of bring this person back, take this person in his place, is very childish and unoriginal. If he really wanted to make a tribute track, he could have rapped about those people in a real way instead of this hackneyed song. For example, go listen to Game's Pac and BIG tribute song "Never Can Say Goodbye".

I think this is Em's most hip hop album since Relapse. There's only one poppy song (the Ed Sheeran feature) and even that is more of a club record than a pop song. All the other songs are proper hip hop records with amazing storytelling, flows and lyricism. There's a perfect balance between songs with content and songs which have rapping for rapping sake. The features are insane- Black Thought, Royce, Slaughterhouse and Anderson Paak. Also, Em definitely stepped up the production on this album. The beats are hard! Definitely a 4/5 album if not a 4.5

The album is amazing man. The only reason it's getting any criticism is because of its length. When you have 24 tracks, even if they are all good, some are going to start feeling like filler. But most of the album is peak Wayne. Mahogany, Piano Trap and Mama Mia is Wayne rapping at such a level that 90% artists just cant compete with. This is the most focused he has been since the Carter 3 days and the album is a testament to that. Storytelling, flows and production are all top-notch.

From the haunting "I am supposed to die tonight", the banging "Piggy Bank" and "my toy soldier" to the absolutely smooth "Ryder music" and "Position of Power" the album is solid front to back. 50's pen game was at its peak with gritty bars and hypnotic hooks. Great article, very well argued. I think you can't have a better cosign than Eminem as far as lyricism is concerned and Em said 50's verses on Places to Go made him want to quit rap. As the writer rightly pointed out, FIf may not be the most technically proficient writer, but his storytelling ability is amazing, the imagery of his lyrics are stark and powerful and of course his flow is easily one of the best the game has ever seen. High quality article.

Great interview! Love the HARD album. Most raw hiphop to come out this year. Love the Slaughterhouse discussion, it got my hopes up for a reunion!
3 0ReplyJune 24, 2020
Nice response. Anyone with any sense knows that if he didn't release it, he didn't mean to go after them anyway. And anyone who knows any hiphop history, would know that Em is not scared of anyone. His beef against Murder Inc back when people were getting shot over this shit proves that.

Wayne has been killing it lyrically but Funeral lacked musical direction. A collab album with Mannie Fresh could be a straight classic!

Joe on his podcast last year almost revealed the fact that everyone in the industry knows they have an open marriage

One of Wayne's hardest songs. A Millie, 5 foot 6 foot and Glory show how Wayne is easily one of the greatest emcees to ever touch the mic.
15 0ReplyJuly 03, 2020
Watch the whole interview on YouTube. It lasted for 1 hour 30 minutes with 50 talking shit the whole time 😂
7 0ReplyJuly 05, 2020
Brilliant sequel. Amazing storytelling, flow and lyricism. Em's flow in the second part of the song is absolutely insane!
7 2ReplyJuly 06, 2020
Never imagined these two working together. Their styles are so disparate! Being a fan of both, I am very excited to hear how it comes out.
4 1ReplyJuly 09, 2020
Amazing collab. Em sounds the best he has in years with the slowed up flow and the crazy bars. The beat is lit and Cudi did his thing too.
18 0ReplyJuly 10, 2020
Somebody get him out of him there. I have a bad feeling about this.
10 0ReplyJuly 21, 2020
Legendary battle! It was great seeing them show love to each other and have fun while performing straight classics.
5 0ReplyJuly 23, 2020
Solid album. Logic got flows for days.

Lupe doesn't get the respect he deserves. Top 5 lyricists of all time. Easily top 10 rappers of all times as well.
7 4ReplySeptember 23, 2020
If anyone is doubting that Lupe is leagues ahead of Kendrick lyrically, just listen to his songs Mural and Dumb it down. Lupe is untouchable on the mic.
3 0ReplySeptember 29, 2020
Wayne is killing these features like its 2007 again! Now we just need a classic album from him.
4 0ReplyOctober 06, 2020
A bar fest! Bumped this mixtape like crazy when it came out.

Article: DMX Dead At 50
I will never be able to listen to "Slipping" the same way again. Rest in peace, DMX. A true hip hop legend.
7 0ReplyApril 09, 2021
I have a conspiracy theory in my head that the label killed DMX. He was gearing up to release a new album. It would have not done very well since X doesn't really have the fan base anymore. But now that he's dead the album is going to go platinum and make the label millions. Look at the insane spike in his streaming numbers. And the fact X was sober and looking healthy in recent appearances...

Nas and Jay-z on the same track? That hasn't happened since Success and Black Republican! This is going to be insane!

Finally a list of producers which gives me hope that the album won't put me to sleep like his last project. Cole is a dope lyricist but his beats choice is pretty bad usually.
9 12ReplyMay 13, 2021
The vibe sounds like Nothing Was the Same which was one of his best projects. If the entire album is like this he could have a classic on his hands.
13 5ReplyMay 21, 2021
80k for a re-release of a mixtape is huge! Nicki is about to do crazy numbers when her album comes out.
2 0ReplyMay 22, 2021
Bin waiting for Banks to drop a proper album for years. This project is dope from start to finish. Insane level of lyricism. Banks is a legendary wordsmith on top of his game here. Beats and features are both sick.

Hope this becomes a trend for rappers who are addicted to drugs. We have lost so many of them because of it.
18 0ReplyJune 26, 2021
When Jay himself admitted defeat on wax, what the fuc* are Jay's fans arguing?! Nas won with ether and anyone who says otherwise is still in denial. Nas created a freaking term with that song. No one says so and so got takeovered. It's hip hop history now. Get over it.
4 1ReplyJuly 09, 2021
As it is, they sell that stuff on ebay. Why the hell would Jay sign a baseball?!
2 0ReplyJuly 11, 2021
Just wish he was here to see all this success. He was a talented artist with a powerful mic presence that we haven't seen since his idol 50 cent.
