Not bad, but I expect a little more from Lupe. I do like it better than Lasers and F&L2. "Dopamine Lit", "Promise", "Tranquillo", "Kill", and "More Than My Heart" are the highlights to me.

They should've just recorded an EP in 2012-2013, when they were touring together, and dropped it in 2014. There's too much hype now: it has to be WTT-level. They'll probably make it eventually...no earlier than 2019.

I haven't listened to the singles just yet, but that tracklist is a bit troubling. Only one featureless song? That's less than Plastic Beach, which ended up sounding kind of disjointed. Still, another Danny Brown/Kelela collab is great to see.

Lol, I swear his son is gonna look back years from now like, "WTF??" It's pretty cool how the promotion for this album has, essentially, become a time capsule for the first year of his life.
1 0ReplyApril 12, 2017
I like the cover. It definitely sets the tone for what I expect the music to sound like: straight-forward and not as conceptually-driven as Kendrick's previous work. There could be some deeper meaning somewhere in the context of the album, but we'll see.
20 1ReplyApril 12, 2017
It's a little early to say this, especially after just 2 listens, but this might end up becoming my favorite Kendrick album. I really like Kendrick's vocal stylings on this album, both the singing and the rapping, and the production is just fantastic. But I think what I love the most is how dense the music is, despite its seemingly scant length of 54mins. There is so much here to unpack, and I'm loving that I'll have to keep going back to see every angle.

Tiller's album was great to me, very cohesive and consistent throughout; it's good to see him getting those numbers without a hit single. Yatchy's album was mostly trash..."Lady in the Yellow" is one of the most badly written songs I've ever heard, but I'm not gonna hate on his success. I liked a few of his songs, too.

Definitely a disappointment. Vic's singing is too warbly, doesn't sound good at all. He's paired down his trademark crazy flow to a straightforward one, and some of his bars distract in the wrong way. Almost all of the best songs were on the EP that came out before the album...not a terrible album, but still disappointing for an artist of his caliber. 5-6/10.

Azealia's problem is, she isn't talented enough to call people out the way she has. The industry loves a bad guy/girl (Em, Kanye, Amy Winehouse, etc.), but you have to be talented enough to surpass the dislike. Azealia's never been able to do that. She's an easy target at this point: like Iggy, but much more detestable.

To me, the issue with the song isn't that it's too positive or too corny, as Chance is already both of these things. The problem is, it doesn't play to his strengths. The instrumentation is too lo-fi, the delivery too subdued, the message too vague--all of these are opposites of what has worked for Chance. But respect to him for trying something new.

What sucks about modern hip-hop is, artists like Young Thug or Yatchy or Pump can make nonsensical music all they want because the beats are catchy. But if a rapper who relies on lyrics a bit more isn't as catchy, then those lyrics become a problem. That's why there's this civil war in hip-hop, because new styles are being held to entirely different standards than older styles are.

I feel Cole sees Kanye as a competitor, first and foremost. They both rap and produce, both were mentored by No I.D. and signed by Jay. So the "dissing" is more just Cole comparing and contrasting himself with how Ye is and how he conducts himself.

The Cudi/collab album for me. 'Ye's only ever done a collab album with Jay, and the last time he and Cudi worked hard on a project together, it made 808s.

Article: Stream J. Cole's "KOD" Album
I've always seen the faults in Cole's previous albums...but THIS. THIS is easily is finest work, front-to-back. Every song is a revelation: is he really doing this? To quote "KOD": "the only question is how." This is an artist at the height of his talents, with his timeliest album yet.
7 3ReplyApril 20, 2018
I still feel like this is Cole's best album to date. Every Cole album I've listened to has had flaws that this one doesn't have. If I had to choose a Cole album to listen to, front-to-back, it would be this one every time.

7 2ReplyApril 27, 2018
This album is a struggle to get through, I'm on track 10 knowing I have 8 more to go...there are a few highlights, but underwhelming for the hype. The singles were easily the best songs, very little surprises thus far.
0 0ReplyApril 27, 2018
Not fair, given all the streams "Rockstar" racked up. That song was released more than 6 months before the album, and all those streams count.
14 1ReplyApril 28, 2018
Big mistake to make that comment right after that illuminating interview. Now that's going to be the headline, because why listen to a 1.5hr interview when there's clickbait?
12 2ReplyMay 01, 2018
Kanye never even said slavery was a choice...he said it SOUNDS like a choice, but that the mental imprisonment that blacks went through was comparable to what Jews went through during the Holocaust. All this clickbait/mob justice bullshit is corny and annoying.

For a triple-disc album that released like 8-9 singles before the album dropped, those are abysmal numbers.
2 1ReplyMay 07, 2018
The album wasn't bad, but it was too long. It had hits..."Blowing Smoke", "Run Me Dry", "Set it Off", "Self-Made", "Don't Get Too High", etc. But TRAPSOUL was stream-lined and consistent, where True to Self was bloated and meandering.
0 0ReplyMay 07, 2018
Shit was obvious given the tone she's set for her newest album.

It's a trap and he shouldn't do it. Kanye the musician absolutely could, but if he's seriously eying a Presidential run, it will surely be used against him.

Article: Playboi Carti "Die Lit" Review
This was a guilty pleasure to me, almost like the other side of KOD's coin. I loved songs like "Lean 4 Real", "Long Time", "Shoota", "Mileage", "Foreign", and,"Top". What he does with his delivery is experimental for hip-hop, but Panda Bear's PBVSGR and Animal Collective's Painting With helped me to understand what he's doing a lot better. This is a solid 7, to me.
11 2ReplyMay 15, 2018
Carti sold more in his first week with a surprise release and no singles than Rae Sremmurd did with a triple album and 9 singles. That's insane.
2 0ReplyMay 16, 2018
It's a cool track, but the instrumental is overpowering the delivery on this one. Looking forward to hearing more from .Paak this year, though.
