A lawyer for Rayshard Brooks, the young Atlanta man that was tragically slain by law enforcement on June 12th, revealed on Monday that media mogul Tyler Perry offered to help cover the costs of the funeral.
Brooks was just 27 years old when he was shot twice and killed after a struggle with two police officers, Garrett Rolfe and Devin Brosnan, outside of a Wendy’s restaurant in Atlanta. Video of the shooting shows Rolfe shooting Brooks twice in the back as he attempts to flee the altercation. Rolfe is potentially facing a murder charge.
Rayshard Brooks’ lawyer Chris Stewart thanked Perry during a tearful press conference with Brooks’ family, saying “We do want to acknowledge and thank Tyler Perry, who we spoke with (and) who will be taking care of the funeral for the family.”
He added, “It’s support like that and it’s people who are actually in this community that love the community that want healing and families like this to never have to go through something like this, to step forward. And we want to thank him for such a generous move.”
The 50-year-old film giant has also extended his philanthropic hand to help ease the struggles of Atlanta’s elderly population amid the pandemic, covering the costs of groceries for senior citizens at dozens of supermarkets.
Rest in Peace Rayshard.
