Tom Cruise is ready to jump back into the role of Maverick, and he's bringing some celebrated talent with him. Like almost everything that came from the 80's and was successful, Top Gun is heading back into theaters. The original movie starred Cruise and Val Kilmer, and followed the story of pilots learning to work with each other in the sky and on the ground. The film helped launch Cruise's action-film career, and is a classic. Hopefully, the sequel does it justice.
As reported by Variety, Jon Hamm and Ed Harris are joining the cast of Top Gun: Maverick. The announcement comes just weeks after it was revealed that Miles Teller also joined the cast. Teller is set to play the son of Goose. Goose was Maverick's co-pilot, and he was killed off in the original Top Gun, so it will be interesting to see how Teller and Cruises character's interact. Hamm and Harris' roles have yet to be confirmed.
Top Gun: Maverick will be set in current times, and the pilots will be battling a new type of enemy: technology. Now that the government uses drones, machines that do not put pilot's lives at risk, the old fighter pilots are becoming obsolete. Cruise and company must prove that nothing can beat a human pilot, while presumably dealing with some kind of new threat elsewhere. Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on July 12, 2019.
